How to Make a DIY Spooky Halloween Card

Halloween is just around the corner! Are you ready to add a creative twist to the fun? We’ve teamed up with our talented artist @created.by.katie_ to bring you an easy step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own Halloween cards for friends.

Why Ohuhu Markers Are My Favourite

I absolutely love using Ohuhu markers theyre smooth, vibrant, and so easy to blend, which makes coloring a joy every time. The dual tips mean I can fill large areas and add tiny details without switching pens, and the colors layer beautifully for depth and dimension. They work perfectly with acrylic pens, letting me add crisp, opaque highlights on top. Plus, theyre affordable, fun to use, and make even small projects like handmade cards feel professional and magical. Honestly, I always reach for these first when I start a new illustration!

What you will need:

Cardstock (marker-friendly).( I am using Ohuhu marker paper).

Ruler, pencil, grey lead for light sketching.

Craft knife or scissors and metal ruler

Ohuhu alcohol markers (choose 38 colors for your palette).

Ohuhu acrylic paint markers

Ohuhu white acrylic paint marker for highlights

Step-by-step process:

Step 1 First cut out desired size of card

Use a ruler to measure and scissors to cut out the desired size of your card.

Step 2 Sketch with a grey lead

Lightly sketch your design using a greyled pencil (soft, light tone). Grey is less visible under alcohol markers than dark graphite and helps avoid muddying colors.

Keep sketches simple and loose these are guides for marker color and acrylic details.

Step 3 Base colors with Ohuhu alcohol markers

Start laying down flat base colors with your alcohol markers. Work from light to dark shades in each area.

Use marker strokes in the same direction for smooth fills. For soft gradients, lay a lighter color first, then gently feather a darker tone into the edge and go back with the lighter to blend.

Test colors on scrap paper first so you know how they layer.

Avoid over-saturating the same spot to prevent buckling or bleeding through the paper.

Step 4 Add mid-tones and shadows with markers

Add a second layer of slightly darker marker for mid-tones and shadows, building shape and depth. Use the brush/medium nib for larger areas, chisel or fine nibs for edges.

If you want textured effects, use short directional strokes with a slightly darker tone.

Step 5 Use Ohuhu acrylic pens for details

Once the marker layers look how you want, use acrylic paint markers for crisp edges, patterns (dots, stars, stripes), decorative elements, or to make colors pop with opaque pigment that sits on top of alcohol marker.

The Ohuhu acrylic paint markers are great for adding small motifs, drawing over marker areas where you want clean, opaque lines, or adding metallic/pearlescent details if you have those pens.

Step 6 Add highlights & final touches with a white Ohuhu acrylic pen

Finish by placing highlights and tiny sparkles with the white acrylic pen: dots in the eyes, reflections on glossy objects, tiny stars, or stitched lines
